The Sentinel

acrylic on canvas (2008)

Another abstract becoming a landscape here, but in this case as the dark colours in the foreground started to take on shapes reminiscent of a ruined civilisation, I thought of the lyrical themes of Pallas' The Sentinel, in particular the passage from Atlantis:

Rising up the crystal dome
of life before the final war
Breaks the waves of sea and air
to save us from a deadly fall
Coming up from far below
Ocean floors unknown to man
The Sentinel waited silently
Until the time was right again

The moon I'd started to envisage setting over the scene became the crystalline dome of the song, and the piece took on the feel of the song. The piece was exhibited and sold at Satellite Two in 2009, but spawned a sequel piece.
