Magnetic Fields

acrylic on canvas (2010)

After Oxygene and Equinoxe, which were loose in structure, Jean-Michel Jarre followed these two relative companion pieces with Magnetic Fields in 1981. Far more structured, and built in movements, the music seemed to gush forth from the speakers in an apparently endless flow of digital information. So different is it to its predecessors I wanted a completely different feel to my  Magnetic Fields so I took the decision to use a different shape and format of canvas. The glowing blue indicates a far more modern, rhythmic feel to the music, and I have tried to depict the lush background to the music in contrast to the sharp melody and jagged rhythms that are overlaid on the record.

There is some debate about which way up this picture looks best, so I chose to string it exactly half way down, allowing it to be hung either way and reversed at will.

There are two companion pieces - Oxygene and Equinoxe.
