Red Rain

acrylic on canvas (2008)

Red Rain was a very dark abstract piece until I added in the swathe of crimson cloud that gives the piece its title (with due credit to Peter Gabriel, of course).

This was the first piece where I utilised the very fine 'flecks' of paint at the edges of the coloured areas. This would go on to become a favourite technique both in my abstract and representational work. The mood of the piece is still very dark. I like to imagine the foreground as a city living in perpetual torment of the relentless weather. Although no ecological theme was intended it's hard not to apply one.
